Fort Worth Fall HVAC Tune-Up: Get Your Heating System Ready Before the First Cold Snap
October is a good time to give your heating system a little attention, before the first chilly morning has everyone reaching for the thermostat at once. A few simple checks can help catch comfort and safety concerns early, while a professional tune-up can prepare your system for the season ahead.
With more than 35 years of experience, Prime Time Heating and Air LLC is focused on reliable home comfort and lasting customer relationships.
Start with a few simple checks
Before scheduling service, take a few minutes to look over the basics:
- Check your air filter. Replace a disposable filter or clean a reusable one if it’s dirty. A clogged filter can restrict airflow and make your system work harder. Follow the filter manufacturer’s guidance.
- Make sure vents are open and clear. Keep supply and return registers free of furniture, rugs and other obstructions.
- Test your thermostat. On a mild day, switch to heat and raise the set temperature a few degrees to see whether the system responds.
- Look around the equipment. Keep indoor and outdoor units clear of stored items, leaves and other debris. Don’t open equipment cabinets or attempt electrical, gas or refrigerant work yourself.
These checks are helpful, but they aren’t a substitute for professional maintenance, especially for gas furnaces.
Why book heating maintenance in fall?
A heating visit gives a qualified HVAC professional a chance to check how your system operates before colder weather arrives. Depending on the equipment, a maintenance appointment may include reviewing controls, airflow, electrical connections, safety devices and venting.
For gas furnaces, safety checks matter. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation recommends having a licensed contractor inspect heating systems for carbon monoxide leaks and other potential issues. If you have a natural-gas or propane furnace, schedule an inspection before the heating season is in full swing.
Also make sure your carbon monoxide alarms are installed and working. Carbon monoxide can’t be seen or smelled. If an alarm sounds, or anyone in the home feels unwell and you suspect exposure, leave the home and call 911 from outside. Don’t restart the appliance until it has been checked.
You can review the state’s safety guidance in the Texas TDLR heating-system notice.
Don’t ignore warning signs
Contact an HVAC professional if your furnace or heat pump won’t heat, cycles on and off repeatedly, makes unusual noises, has weak airflow or displays a fault code. Water around indoor equipment, a burning or unusual odor, or repeated breaker trips are also reasons to get help rather than keep testing the system.
If you smell gas, leave the home immediately and contact your gas utility or emergency services from outside.
Take a look at the attic, too
Heating equipment is only part of the comfort picture. Insufficient attic insulation or air leaks can make rooms feel drafty and cause your system to run longer. Look for insulation that has settled below the tops of the floor joists, and note any obvious gaps around attic openings or penetrations.
Don’t cover attic vents or add insulation around fixtures unless you know they’re rated for it. A qualified professional can assess insulation, air sealing, ventilation and clearance concerns together. ENERGY STAR’s attic insulation guide explains why sealing and insulation can help improve comfort year-round.
Make a plan before the rush
A practical fall checklist is simple: check the filter, test the heat, make sure vents are clear and schedule professional maintenance. If the system needs repair, ask for a clear explanation of the problem and an estimate before approving work. For insulation or air sealing, ask what areas need attention and how the proposed work will affect comfort.
